Das Bündnis zwischen Iran, Syrien und der djihadistischen Schiiten-Miliz Hisbollah im Libanon stellt eine strategische Herausforderung für Israel dar. Zu verstehen ist diese Allianz nur vor dem Hintergrund des Kampfes zwischen arabischem Nationalismus und Islamismus um Einfluss auf die Regierungen und um Unterstützung in der Bevölkerung in fast allen Ländern des Nahen Ostens. Dem vom Iran angeführten Bündnis mit Syrien und der Hisbollah, zu dem auch die palästinensische Hamas gerechnet werden muss, steht eine widersprüchliche Koalition gegenüber, die neben den meisten sonstigen arabischen Staaten auch Israel und den Westen umfasst. In dieser Auseinandersetzung ist die Frage des Terrorismus zwar eine der entscheidenden, aber keineswegs die einzige, die in dem Vortrag erörtert werden soll.

Barry Rubin ist Professor am Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Direktor des Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center und Herausgeber des Middle East Review of International Affairs Journal. Er schreibt eine Kolumne für die Jerusalem Post und ist Autor von The Truth About Syria und The Long War for Freedom: The Arab Struggle for Democracy in the Middle East. Zuletzt hat er die Bände Iraq After Saddam, Global Survey of Islamism und Political Islam herausgegeben. Barry Rubin ist Vorstandsmitglied von Scholars for Peace in The Middle East (www.spme.net).

The coalition of Iran, Syria and the djihadistic Shi’ites’ militia Hezbollah in Lebanon is a strategic challenge for Israel. This alliance is only understandable under consideration of the fight between Arab nationalism and Islamism in order to get influence on governments and support of the population in almost all the countries in the Middle East. This coalition, headed by Iran and including Syria, Hezbollah and obviously also the Palestinian Hamas, faces a contradictory coalition in which most of the other Arab countries but also Israel and the West are involved. In this controversy, the question of terrorism is a decisive but not the only one to be argued in this lecture.
