B'nai B'rith Europe wishes to express its deep disappointment at certain statements by some European governments suggesting that Israel's response to the random firing of missiles by Hamas at the civilian population is disproportionate.

Israel, being the only democratic nation in the region, evacuated Gaza in 2005 and for eight years has endured continuous attacks by Hamas without provocation.

During this time, up to a third of its population and some 25% of its schools have lived under a threat that would not be acceptable to any other Nation.

During the course of the current hostilities Israel has attempted carefully to target only military/ terrorist infrastructure and personnel. Only a small minority of reported deaths were, sadly, civilian, and these would likely have been avoided were it not for the fact that rocket launches have been hidden in civilian residential areas.

Represented in 58 countries, B’NAI B’RITH is the world’s largest Jewish Human Rights, Community action and Humanitarian organisation. B’NAI BRITH EUROPE is represented in 29 countries throughout Europe.
With its office based in Brussels B’NAI B’RITH is represented at the European Parliament, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, the United Nations in Geneva and UNESCO in Paris. The main goals of B’NAI B’RITH are the defence of Human Rights and the fight against anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia, the defence of the State of Israel, humanitarian relief for the needy in Eastern Europe and in Israel and action to develop Jewish identity, Jewish culture and Jewish heritage.

Le B'nai B'rith Europe tient à exprimer sa profonde déception face à certaines déclarations de certains gouvernements européens qui suggèreraient que la riposte israélienne aux tirs aléatoires de missiles par le Hamas sur la population civile israélienne serait disproportionnée.

Israël, étant la seule nation démocratique dans la région, a évacué la bande de Gaza en 2005 et a subi pendant huit ans des attaques continues par le Hamas, sans provocation de sa part.

Pendant ce temps, un tiers de sa population et environ 25% de ses écoles ont vécu sous une menace qui ne serait acceptable pour aucune autre nation.

Au cours des hostilités actuelles Israël a tenté soigneusement de ne toucher que des cibles militaires et terroristes. Une faible partie des victimes signalées serait malheureusement composée de civils, mais cela aurait probablement pu être évité si les lancements de missiles n'avaient pas été effectués à partir de zones résidentielles civiles.
